[Events] IAEA Interregional Workshop on Safety Assessment of Remediation successfully held in Taiyuan, China

On September 11-15, 2023, the IAEA Interregional Workshop on Safety Assessment of Remediation, hosted by CIRP, took place in Taiyuan, China. The event gathered 30 officials and experts from 25 countries, including Russia, Egypt, Venezuela, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand and more, to engage in specialized discussions on safety assessment of remediation. The workshop was chaired by IAEA Technical Officer Mr. Zhiwen Fan. Mr. Boxuan Shi, the Vice President of CIRP, delivered the welcoming address at the opening ceremony, followed by an overall introduction of CIRP.

Decommissioning and environmental remediation play a crucial role in the sustainable development of nuclear energy, closely related to the safety of both the public and the environment. This workshop focused on regulatory strategies and remediation methods, serving as a platform for sharing good practices and offered a valuable opportunity for international exchange. The event was composed of expert lectures, national presentations, technical tour, group discussions, and tabletop exercises.

Mr. Anxi Cui and Mr. Lixiao Guo, experts in waste management from CIRP were invited to deliver presentations, providing a deep insight into China's development in this area. During the workshop, participants visited CIRP’s laboratories and research facilities, including the Radioactive Waste Incineration Laboratory, Laboratory for Graphite Dust of High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors, Decontamination Technology Laboratory, and Laboratory for Waste Characterization and Wet Oxidation.

The successful implementation of this workshop demonstrates CIRP’s dedication to fostering collaboration with IAEA and other nations, promoting the research strengths of CIRP in decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
